EUROPEAN UNION PROGRAMMES

PHARE and TACIS

PHARE and TACIS are programmes which allow NGOs such as EBU to bring together those of its constituent members who are within the EU with sister organisations in Central/Eastern Europe and in the former Soviet republics. They provide grants towards the cost of projects which increase the social and economic integration of excluded groups, including disabled people.

Over the past two years EBU has been able to use PHARE funding to actively assist its members in Central and Eastern Europe in several ways.

One example is the installation of a computerised printing house for the production of braille schoolbooks in Romania, with a similar scheme underway in Bulgaria.

We are now working on two project applications under the TACIS programme to help blind and partially sighted people in Russia.

This is likely to remain an area in which EBU is active as we frequently receives requests for assistance and technical expertise.
