The EBU Euro Group was formed under the aegis of the EBU Liaising Commission with the European Union.
Since mid-1998, thanks to the support of the
European Commission and the
European Central bank , the EBU Euro Group has been co-ordinating information and training programmes on the euro for visually impaired people in Europe. The EBU has appointed a euro co-ordinator in each of the 15 EU member states, who are responsible for the decentralised implementation of its euro activities.
The EBU Euro Group participates in the
Easy Euro project launched by the European Commission.
On 1st January 2002, all visually impaired European citizens - like all European citizens - will have to be able to handle euro notes and coins with precision and confidence. This confidence must be developed and maintained over the coming years and especially in 2002, the critical year. Our information and training campaign thus aims to cover the years 2000 to 2002.
A specific network has to be set up to inform and train visually impaired European citizens, through:
the training of trainers (pyramidal training structure) in the 11 or 15 European Union countries
the provision of suitable training material for trainers, i.e. replica euro notes that are very similar to the actual euro notes and sets of the 8 actual euro coins
development, reproduction and availability of effective, specifically adapted teaching tools for trainers
development, reproduction and availability of a wide range of training and informative material that takes account of the various specific needs of visually impaired people and is accessible to them, both in terms of content (e.g. adapted descriptions where visual references are made) and form (adapted reading formats).
