Job Title
Car/Motor mechanic
Job Description
Olav is from Norway and partially sighted. He works part-time in a car repair
shop. As his sight worsened, Olav had to stop working on newer cars because of
their computerised technology. He now specialises in veteran cars and especially
American old mobiles.
Getting the job
Norwegian car mechanics first complete vocational studies at a technical school.
Following two years of practical training, an examination gives them a craft
certificate. Olav studied with other sighted students using technical aids to
assist with the theoretical studies. 234
Adjustments
Even now when he is practically blind Olav is absolutely independent in
his movements at work. He has just recently started using his white cane - just
in case.
Quote
Olav says: “I feel lucky that my hobby is my work as well. It has
been easier to work having this genuine interest.”
