Romania – A Literary Achievement

The Romanian Academy, the highest cultural forum in our country, as in all other European countries in fact, decided to give an award to Radu Sergiu Ruba for his novel “A never fading summer”, in the Romanian original “O vară ce nu mai apune”, Humanitas Publishers, Bucharest, 2014. The award was conferred on December 16th by the President of The Romanian Academy in a dedicated ceremony.

The novel, widely appreciated by readers, specialists and the media, evokes the world seen, scanned and memorised by the imperfect eyes of a partially sighted child until the age of eleven, when he lost his sight. It is an obviously autobiographic approach.

Radu Sergiu Ruba was born on October 14th 1954. He studied at the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literatures at the University of Bucharest; formerly he was the President of The Romanian Association of the Blind, member of the EBU Board from 2011–2015 and of the Onkyo Contest Jury. He is a well-known writer in the two Romanian speaking countries, Romania and the Republic of Moldova, one of the most appreciated of his generation. To date, he has published 13 books: six of poetry, two novels, one book of short stories, two books of essays, one of interviews and Homer's Constellation, an anthology of Romanian visually impaired writers. The second edition of this anthology, revised and substantially enlarged, will be published next year.

R.S. Ruba is also a translator of fiction books and philosophical essays from French into Romanian. The list includes authors like Michel Tournier, Olivier Rolin, Nicolas Ancion and Gilles Lipowetsky.

Since 1992, without interruption, he has been the senior editor of the radio programme ”Ochiul Interior” (The Inner Eye), a 20 minute programme broadcast every week on the news channel of the Public Radio Broadcasting Company. The programme deals with all the issues concerning the visually disabled people and their challenges.

Congratulations to Radu Sergiu Ruba for this distinction!
