- 4 January : Anniversary of Louis Braille's birthday (born on 4 January 1809)
- 4 January : World Braille Day (cf. resolution 3 A passed at WBU 5th General Assembly, Melbourne, 20-24 November 2000)
- 6 January : Anniversary of Louis Braille's death (deceased on 6 January 1852)
- 3 May 2008 : The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities enters into force.
- 17 May : World Information Society Day (VI organisations now tend to mark the day highlighting blind or partially sighted people's access needs)
- 27 August : Anniversary of EBU's foundation (founded on 27 August 1984)
- 12 October : World Sight Day
- 15 October : White Cane Day
- 13 November : Anniversary of Valentin Hauy's birth (born in 1745, he was a famous French educator of blind people and the founder of the first special boarding school in France).
- 3 December : International Day of Disabled People (United Nations Resolution 47/3 of 14 October 1992)
- 20 December : 14th anniversary of the adoption of the UN Standard Rules on the Equalization of Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities (adopted on 20 december 1993)
