Italy - A radio marathon to celebrate the Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women

Last November 25th, on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the Italian Union of the Blind and Partially Sighted (UICI) turned on the microphones of its Slash Radio Web to host a radio marathon titled “Zitta a chi?” (“How dare you shut me up?”) and send a strong and clear message: no woman should remain silent, especially those living with a disability.

Violence against women with disabilities is still a hidden phenomenon, underrepresented in statistics and often inadequately addressed by protection systems, media and public opinion. With this broadcast the UICI aimed at helping break the silence by giving space to the voices, experiences and reflections of women who constantly face physical, social and cultural barriers, prejudices and clichés.

The live broadcast hosted journalists, writers, actresses, influencers, representatives of institutions, women and men from all over Italy, for an open, participatory and choral dialogue that symbolically united the country from north to south. A marathon of voices to say together “stop the violence against women!”.

At the end of the broadcast, a number of UICI local offices, starting with its national headquarters in Rome, were lit up in red as a symbolic gesture of commitment and solidarity towards all women who are victims of violence.
