At the beginning of summer in 1825, in front of an audience of parents, the young Louis Braille, aged 16, was honoured. This confidential event took place at the Royal Institute for the Blind in Paris. Next to the Director of the Institute, and in spite of his shyness, the young Louis presented, his invention of writing and reading for the first time. Based on the combination of six dots, the system of writing in raised dots was born.
Throughout 2025, many events dedicated to the invention of the Braille code have taken place and will be organised all over the world. In France, two events are to come: on September 20 in Coupvray, the birthplace of Louis Braille (Seine et Marne) a commemorative day will take place for this bicentenary; A varied program will on offer
On November 13, a symposium on Braille will take place at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France. Braille is the reading and writing system that persists all over the world despite the advancement of technology. But it will be in 2029 that the real bicentenary of Braille should take place since it was in 1829 that the first book in Braille was published. It was many years after the death of our brilliant inventor that Braille was recognised worldwide as the writing of the blind people around the world.
