Croatia - “Not Seeing Does Not Make Us Invisible” Campaign Marks International White Cane Day

To mark World Sight Day and International White Cane Day, the Croatian Blind Union (CBU) organised a public awareness event at Zrinjevac Park in Zagreb as part of the campaign “Not Seeing Does Not Make Us Invisible.”

Held on Saturday, 11 October 2025, the event created a vibrant and inclusive atmosphere with interactive and educational activities promoting understanding of the experiences of people with visual impairments. Participants tried walking and dancing blindfolded, vision impairment simulations using VR glasses, Braille writing, exploring mystery boxes blindfolded, navigating an obstacle course with a white cane, and received free eye health check-ups. A children’s corner and live music added to the community spirit.

The event was supported by representatives of the relevant Ministries, the Ombudsman for Persons with Disabilities, and representatives of the City of Zagreb and the City General Assembly, whose presence highlighted the importance of continued cooperation in promoting accessibility and equal opportunities for all.

The Croatian Blind Union emphasised that people with visual impairments face daily challenges in education, employment, and public life, but with community support and understanding, they can participate equally and actively in society.

The event received extensive national media coverage, including features in the main evening news and other programmes dedicated to current affairs, significantly contributing to greater public awareness of the importance of inclusion and accessibility.

The campaign was co-financed by the National Foundation for Civil Society Development and supported by a donation from Roche Ltd. Together, we can build a society where everyone is seen, heard, and included.
