Getting to know the Armenian Blind Union of the Disabled Public Organisation

The Armenian Blind Union of the Disabled Public Organisation was founded on September 29, 1930, on the initiative of 20 young people deprived of sight, all of whom were former students of an American orphanage. Shortly after, in January 1931, the organisation's first production workshop was opened in Yerevan, where the production of brushes and paper bags was organized. It was no coincidence that the work began with these products, because these blind people had learned these professions in an American orphanage. This facilitated the beginning of their work and accelerated it. Having no financial resources, these 20 dedicated people achieved the solution to the problems they set themselves at the cost of numerous deprivations, thanks to dedicated work, purposeful actions and favourable conditions provided by the legal acts of Armenia. The first congress of the Armenian Blind Union, which took place in March 1932, was of great importance in the development of the organisation's activities, the creation of material resources and the provision of work to the blind. By the decision of the congress, a wide network of production workshops and various service facilities were created in the country and the range of products was expanded. As a result of concerted work and purposeful actions, a reliable material and financial base was created, thanks to which in 1935-1936 the organisation completely repaid the loans taken from the state. The following years are recorded as years of prosperity and development of the Armenian Blind Union. The organisation built production and administrative buildings with its own funds, the total area of which is 40,000 square meters, where as of July 1, 1981, 2655 people worked, of which 1239 were visually impaired. The organisation has also built 42 apartment buildings in Yerevan and almost all cities of Armenia and distributed apartments to its employees.

Currently, the Armenian Blind Union of Disabled People NGO has in its structure educational and production enterprises, a House of Culture, a Publishing House with its printing house and a recording studio, a four-part professional choir and an orchestra of Armenian folk instruments with its soloists, which employ about 300 people in total. Various cultural and sports events are organized in the House of Culture of the Armenian Blind Union. The four-part professional choir and the orchestra of Armenian folk instruments regularly perform concerts in Yerevan and other cities of Armenia.

Today, the Armenian Blind Union of Disabled People NGO is considered one of the prosperous and powerful public organisations in Armenia.
